Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the single TLD planned for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level names remained functional.
